AUTONOMOUS TANDEM DRIFT
Toyota Research Institute
Toyota Research Institute partnered with Stanford University to push the envelope of autonomous driving even further by drifting two autonomous cars in extraordinarily close proximity. This was another opportunity to work with the talented team at Echo Charlie. At times, these vehicles were mere inches from one another as they drifted through a series of loops; changing direction and position at each loop completely autonomously. To capture this dynamic performance of advanced technology, we proposed filming at night, which required lighting a skid pad that was over 100 meters square from an additional 60 feet off the drive path. The extreme difficulties of this experiment were shared by both the team of engineers and our film crew, but in the end both were a huge success.
